Lorraine Sammons Raymond, age 86, of Wilmington, DE, died on November 15, 2008 at Methodist Country House, her home since 2003.
The daughter of the late Harry W. and Eulah Jackson Sammons, she was a native of Springfield, IL. She attended the University of Illinois, where she studied bacteriology and was a member of the independent social group, Alcestis. She was married in 1943 to Richard L. Raymond at the San Marcos (TX) Army Air Base. She was a dedicated homemaker for her family and served as secretary/treasurer of Groundwater Environmental Consultants, Inc. Mrs. Raymond became a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in 1960 and was an active leader in Girl Scouts. Captivated at the age of eight by over 30 flights in her grandfather Roscoe Barb's open cockpit Swallow biplane, she and her husband obtained their private pilot licenses in 1977 and enjoyed many flights together for over 25 years. She was an active member of the Delaware Chapter of the International Organization of Women Pilots ("The Ninety-Nines"). The Raymonds spent their retirement in Pagosa Springs, CO, where Mrs. Raymond was a diplomat for the Chamber of Commerce for 12 years.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Richard L. Raymond; sister, Jean S. Ogez of Oklahoma City, OK; 4 children, Richard L. Raymond, Jr. and wife Mary of West Chester, PA; Carole R. Edwards and husband Conley of Richmond, VA; Robert J. Raymond of Wilmington; and Deborah A. Sams and husband Craig of Wilmington; and 5 grandchildren, John Raymond, Conley L. Edwards IV, Laura E. Raymond, Michelle A. Raymond, and Kyle C. Sams.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 1 pm at the Danby Chapel of the Methodist Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807. Graveside services will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, IL on Monday, November 24, 2008 at 11 am.
